A new source of energy for Derby

Derby Alternative Energy Plant uses the process of gasification to generate power using waste wood as the fuel source. This plant will create up to 12 local jobs in Derby.

It is estimated that, at full capacity, up to 30,000 tonnes of waste wood will be converted into electricity each year, significantly reducing CO2 emissions compared to coal fired power stations.

At maximum output of 3.0 MW, the plant will generate around 24,000 MWh of electricity a year - enough to power up to 3,000 homes.

The Process

Waste wood, otherwise destined for landfill, is initially converted to syngas by an air starved controlled thermal process. The gas is cleaned and fed into generators to produce electricity.

Key stages of the process include:

  • Waste wood from construction and demolition waste as well as civic amenity sites is delivered pre-shredded to site for inclusion in the process.
  • The waste wood is converted in a gasifier (metal chamber in which waste wood is added and gasified), at which point the primary syngas is extracted.
  • This primary syngas is passed through a variety of cleaning processes.
  • The resulting clean syngas is then run through an engine to generate electricity.
  • This electricity is exported and sold to the National Grid.

The Derby Alternative Energy Plant is operated by Withion Power Limited.
